Amy Bordwell, MEd, MA, LPC
I understand there are bumps and ruts that come with life – and they usually hit at the most inconvenient times. Adding therapy on top of everything can be difficult, but everybody deserves to be heard, so I commend you for taking this step. Below you will find out more about me and my approach to therapy. I hope we are a match! Thank you so much for looking at my profile.
As a therapist, I am person-centered and solution-focused in my approach and see each person who comes to me for help as an individual with their own wants, needs, desires, and goals. Each person is unique and is looking to gain something different in therapy. My training has given me the knowledge and tools to draw upon multiple treatment modalities to accommodate your individual needs. I do not practice with a “one size fits all” approach.
Therapy can be an amazing healing experience. I am fortunate because most people love to talk, but I’ve always loved to listen. I love hearing people’s stories; and I truly believe that being trusted with a piece of a person’s life that is either tragic or triumphant is an honor and should be treated as such. I thrive in the realm of motivational interviewing and Narrative therapy, which means learning as much I can about you, and then we determine together how to move forward. In this space we are a team, and while I am a therapist, nobody knows more about you than you.
Personally, I am a career-changer but have always hovered in the realm of counseling by way of education and admissions. During that part of my life, I obtained a Bachelor of Science degree and a Master of Arts. Most recently, I graduated from DePaul University with a Master of Education in Counseling. During that time and in addition to normal coursework, I had a unique opportunity to offer group therapy to women refugees from Afghanistan. I worked at a community center during my yearlong internship and continued my work there after graduation. Now, I am fully licensed and could not be more excited to begin at Mosaic.
Although my experience as a licensed counselor is new, my experience in life is not. I am seasoned and have been through it; the ups and downs as it pertains to work, marriage, children, family, money, death, addiction, etc. I’ve also completed post-graduate training in Dialectical Behavior Therapy.
I truly believe this job is my calling. After losing my little sister to a drug overdose, I was in a terrible place. The guilt and shame and emptiness were overwhelming. I finally reached out for help, and that’s when everything began to change. I owe that therapist a lot of credit for the way I’m living life now. The process wasn’t always easy, but it was worth it! In addition, my experience in a community center afforded me the opportunity to help many different people with many different problems, ranging in issues from depression and anxiety to addiction and personality disorders. I am confident that by working together, we can find some peace for you as well.
