Trauma can continue affecting you long after an experience has ended. You may feel constantly on guard, disconnected from yourself, overwhelmed by reminders, or unsure why certain situations trigger such intense reactions.

Trauma therapy is an important part of healing. Mosaic offers trauma-informed therapy in person in Homewood, IL, and online throughout Illinois, Indiana, and Florida. Treatment is personalized to your experiences, needs, readiness, and goals.

Who This Is For

Trauma therapy may be helpful if you:

  • Have experienced abuse, neglect, violence, loss, or instability
  • Feel affected by childhood experiences or family patterns
  • Have survived a frightening accident, illness, medical procedure, or disaster
  • Experience distress related to discrimination, oppression, or identity-based harm
  • Feel overwhelmed by memories or reminders
  • Remain on guard even when you want to relax
  • Disconnect from your emotions, body, or surroundings
  • Struggle with shame, guilt, anger, or self-blame
  • Notice trauma affecting relationships, work, parenting, or daily life
  • Want support without being pressured to disclose everything immediately

About Trauma Therapy

Trauma is not defined only by what happened. It can also involve how an experience affected your ability to cope, feel secure, trust others, or understand yourself.

Some people recognize a specific traumatic event. Others have lived through repeated experiences, chronic instability, discrimination, emotional neglect, complicated relationships, or environments where they had to remain alert and adaptable.

Trauma-related experiences may include:

  • Feeling constantly watchful or unable to relax
  • Intrusive memories, nightmares, or distressing reminders
  • Avoiding people, places, conversations, or situations
  • Feeling emotionally numb, detached, or disconnected
  • Experiencing shame, guilt, anger, or self-blame
  • Becoming overwhelmed by conflict or uncertainty
  • Difficulty trusting others or maintaining relationships
  • Feeling unsafe even when no immediate threat is present
  • Physical tension, restlessness, or heightened startle responses
  • Difficulty concentrating or remembering parts of an experience
  • Feeling as though you are reliving something from the past
  • Relying on substances, overworking, isolation, or other strategies to cope

You do not need to have a PTSD diagnosis or describe your experience in a particular way to discuss it in therapy.

What Is Trauma-Informed Therapy?

Trauma-informed therapy recognizes that behaviors and coping patterns often developed for understandable reasons. Treatment is not about judging how you survived or forcing you to revisit painful memories before you are ready.

Your therapist will work with you to establish goals, understand current symptoms, and develop a pace that feels manageable. Early sessions may focus on building trust, strengthening coping resources, and helping you feel more grounded in the present.

Depending on your needs and your therapist’s training, therapy may include:

  • Learning grounding and emotional-regulation strategies
  • Understanding trauma responses and triggers
  • Recognizing patterns of avoidance, shutdown, or hypervigilance
  • Exploring beliefs shaped by traumatic experiences
  • Developing greater awareness of physical sensations
  • Strengthening boundaries and communication
  • Processing memories when appropriate
  • Reconnecting with values, identity, relationships, and meaningful activities
  • Building self-compassion and reducing shame

Trauma treatment is not one universal method. Mosaic therapists use different approaches based on their training and each client’s needs.

Trauma Therapy in Homewood and Online Across Illinois, Indiana, and Florida

Mosaic offers in-person trauma therapy at our Homewood office for clients from Flossmoor, Olympia Fields, and surrounding Chicago South Suburbs. Online trauma therapy is available to clients located throughout Illinois, Indiana, and Florida.

What to Expect

Your first sessions will focus on what is affecting you now, what helps you cope, and what you want therapy to change. You control what you share, and you do not need to tell the full story of a traumatic experience during your first appointment.

Your therapist may help you identify triggers, understand survival responses, strengthen emotional-regulation skills, and create a plan for approaching deeper work safely and gradually. Treatment will be adjusted based on your symptoms, preferences, and response over time.

Common Questions

Do I need a PTSD diagnosis to begin trauma therapy?

No. People seek trauma therapy for many experiences and symptoms, including experiences that do not meet the criteria for PTSD. Your therapist will assess what you are experiencing and discuss whether a diagnosis is appropriate or required for insurance billing.

Will I have to describe everything that happened?

No. You can begin by discussing how you are currently affected and what you want help with. Your therapist should not pressure you to share detailed memories before you are ready or before adequate support and coping resources are in place.

Can trauma affect the body?

Trauma can be associated with physical tension, sleep disruption, restlessness, numbness, heightened startle responses, changes in breathing, stomach discomfort, and other stress responses. New or unexplained physical symptoms should also be discussed with a medical professional.

What approaches does Mosaic use for trauma?

Approaches vary by therapist and may include trauma-informed care, CBT, ACT, DBT-informed skills, mindfulness, somatic techniques, narrative therapy, expressive practices, or other evidence-informed methods. Mosaic will help identify a provider whose training fits your needs.

Can children and teenagers receive trauma therapy?

Yes, depending on provider availability and fit. Therapy for children and teenagers is adapted to their age, communication style, developmental needs, family circumstances, and ability to participate. Caregiver involvement may be recommended.

Does Mosaic offer online trauma therapy?

Yes. Online trauma therapy may be available throughout Illinois, Indiana, and Florida, along with in-person appointments in Homewood. Your therapist will help determine whether virtual treatment is appropriate for your symptoms, privacy, safety needs, and treatment goals.

What if I need immediate help?

Routine therapy appointments and messages are not emergency services. If you may harm yourself or someone else, cannot remain safe, or are experiencing an immediate emergency, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department. You can also call or text 988 to reach the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.
